When Self-Care Stopped Feeling Selfish

When I was younger, I used to think self-care was something you earned.
You worked hard enough...You took care of everyone else...You finished everything on your never-ending to-do list...Then, maybe, if there was any time left, you could do something for yourself.
The funny thing is... there was almost never any time left.
For years I poured my energy into everyone around me. Family, work, responsibilities... whatever needed me most became the priority. Somewhere along the way, I quietly convinced myself that taking care of myself was selfish.
It took me a long time to realize something important.
You can't pour from an empty cup.
Today, self-care looks very different than it once did.
Sometimes it's sitting in my garden watching my hibiscus bloom.
Sometimes it's floating in the pool, letting the Arizona sun warm my face while my mind finally becomes quiet.
Sometimes it's creating jewelry, blending oils, or designing something simply because it brings me joy.
Sometimes it's painting my nails, taking a slow walk, drinking my coffee while it's still hot, or spending a few peaceful minutes with Queenie curled up beside me.
None of those moments change the world.
But they change me.
They remind me who I am underneath the responsibilities.
That's really what self-care has become for me.
It isn't about escaping life.
It's about reconnecting with yourself so you can return to life feeling more grounded, more present, and more like... you.
Ironically, I've discovered that when I care for myself first, I'm actually a better wife, friend, creator, business owner, and human being.
I have more patience.
More creativity.
More compassion.
More energy to give.
Spirited Crafts was built around that idea.
Yes, I create jewelry.
Yes, I make self-care products.
But what I truly hope I'm creating is permission.
Permission to slow down.
Permission to breathe.
Permission to choose yourself once in a while without guilt.
Because self-love isn't selfish.
It's the foundation everything else is built upon.
If reading this reminds you to take even five minutes for yourself today, then this little corner of the internet has done exactly what I hoped it would.
Take care of yourself.
Not because you've earned it.
But because you always deserved it.
